Pattern art, as a symbol of culture and design, conveys information about the culture, society, and nationality. Through ages of development, pattern art develops keep evolving, becoming the one the main style representing different forms and levels of culture. Nowadays, the traditional Chinese pattern, with its unique styles and profound grace, becomes the focus of modern art design.This paper will analyze the historical development, classification, symbolization, color utilization, and its application in traditional spatial art of traditional Chinese pattern. Based on these, with reference to the trends of modern interior design and real examples of applications, this paper will extend and summary how we can apply the formation, representation, and color of traditional Chinese pattern to modern interior design. In other words, how to use the symbolized traditional Chinese pattern to create a style of interior design with the co-existence of modernity and the unique traditional Chinese spirits. It is noteworthy that, only when the creation of spatial art meets the observers'level of appreciation, there exists the value of applying of traditional Chinese pattern, and thus works better. Therefore, in real design, in order to better express the meaning hidden behind the traditional patterns to create atmosphere and specific character, only when the trend of aesthetic subject has been fully understood, the creation and performance would be better to service for the aesthetic subject. This article is trying to, through a detailed study of cultural patterns, identify not only beyond the established traditional pattern, but could be reasonably and creatively used in the interior design, to meet the contemporary psychological language requirement, achieve the continuity of traditional Chinese pattern, which is a national culture, and breakthrough and innovate on modern spatial design, which further allows the passing on of profoundness of national culture in design arts.
