Vocational and technical education as the structure type of higher education in China, it developed in the 1980s. It was formally included in the national education system when the Decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Reforming the Education System was decreed in 1985. The past 20 years, vocational education has been greatly developed, it has become an important part of higher education, but because of the traditional long-term attention for regular higher education, Chinese vocational education does not really form its own characteristic, especially for English teaching in vocational colleges, it is basically followed the normal practice of English teaching in higher education, at best, to reduce the difficulty. This resulted in the dislocation goal of English teaching, the characteristics of vocational education is not fully reflected; too much emphasis on basic, failed to consider the employment needs of vocational students; application is not strong, students can not use English effectively; a tendency to serious examination is not good for a comprehensive English language ability. So explore the characteristics of vocational English teaching is imminent. As Premier Wen Jiabao emphasized the importance of vocational education repeatedly on different occasions, "a blueprint for the development of vocational education, how to describe can not be overstated; the importance of vocational education, how to emphasis can not be overstated."English for Special Purposes (hereafter referred to as ESP) as a teaching approach rely on the communicative needs of the students for learning purposes, thus establishing the teaching content and methods, it meets the vocational education and training objectives, introduce this type of vocational English teaching mode, not only enable students to maximize the competent English abilities needed for future work in the limited time, but also can meet the social needs for practical talents of English. This paper uses a literature review method to do a general description for ESP, and then take Suzhou College of Arts and Crafts for the survey, mainly through questionnaires and interviews to understand this institute's ESP teaching situation, find out problems, and use the results of interviews with teachers to supplement the survey, propose suggestions to improve the institute's ESP teaching.This paper started from five parts to discuss: Introduction. First, introducing the research background. Followed mainly a literature review, including an overview of ESP and development of ESP teaching, describes the generation of ESP, definitions, types, the relationship between General English and this teaching development trend at home and abroad. Finally, this paper describes the research significance and methods; Chapter 2 ESP teaching situation in Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute. Mainly covers the basic situation of the school, teacher faculty, student situations and current education reform of ESP; Chapter 3 ESP teaching results in Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute. In our hospital 200 students and 9 teachers conducted a questionnaire survey and interviews, analysis in learners'demand for courses, the major teaching mode of ESP course, teaching hardware and teachers'view; Chapter 4 Improved Suggestions for ESP teaching in Suzhou Art & Design Technology Institute. Discussed mainly from three aspects:integration of curriculum design, integration of teaching methods, professional development for ESP teachers; Chapter 4 Conclusion,summarizing the whole text.
