In order to encourage oversea people to learn about Chinese language and culture so as to establish friendly ties with different countries and enhance world cultural diversity development, from the end of 2004, China has established oversea"Confucius Institute"with an aim to popularize mandarin by drawing experiences from other countries on how to spread their own language and cooperating with local organizations. Guided by the principles of mutual respect, friendly consultation, equality and mutual benefit, Confucius Institute has conducted oversea mandarin teaching, educational and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and other countries. As programs proceed, the teaching performance of Confucius Institute, the main organization for mandarin popularization has gained much attention.This essay summarizes the compilation principles and characteristics of mandarin teaching textbooks used in Confucius Institute on the foundation of a brief introduction about Confucius Institute, its work to popularize mandarin and textbooks it uses. It points out that the shortcoming of current textbook is that the compilation is not fit for the local teaching practice and can not meet students'need. The reason is that the compiler fails to take into account that students in Confucius Institutes are detached from the language (mandarin) environment. In addition, language differences also have impact on people's way of thinking. However, the majority of current textbooks are compiled in Chinese way of thinking. Thus, they ignore the differences in mindset, acquisition method, and learning habits between foreigners and Chinese.Finally, this essay states that while compiling textbooks for oversea Confucius Institute,"national diversity"should be taken into consideration. That is to say, one should first conduct survey and know fully about local teaching practices and students'learning needs before the compilation. The contents and compilation of textbook should not only be in line with Chinese language principles and traditional culture, but also be fit for the mindset and learning habit of potential students.
