Focusing on the black women themselves, this paper attempts to explore the reasons why Celie lose independence, and on this basis, to analyze how Celie regain independent consciousness and independent ability through self-emancipation and self-empowerment. After the regain of independence, black women keep relatively harmonious and coexisted with black men. This paper holds the idea that the loss of Celie's self consciousness roots in her lack of human consciousness and God consciousness. Firstly, Celie has no alternative but inherit the slave origin as a descendant of slaves; As a black woman, Celie also becomes black males'slave inevasible. However, slave never be taken as a real person.Dual slave identity makes Celie loss her human consciousness. Secondly, Black Americans'ancestors were uprooted crowds. They lost their homelands in the period of slave trade, meanwhile, lost their religious tradition and turn into"converted Christian". Moreover, as the offspring of them, Celie was actually further away from African religious tradition for a long time, and she starts a new faith in the white god in a completely different religious atmosphere. But, the white god isn't the one who protects the black people. In fact, Celie's god belief is hypocritical, her God consciousness is lost.In order to regain independence, primarily Celie should re-establish independent consciousness in the realm of spirit; and next, Celie should recover independent ability in actual action.First of all, Celie regain independent consciousness through self-emancipation. Shug's body enlightment helps Celie recover human consciousness; and under Shug's guide, Celie breaks down her blind belief in the white god and build up god consciousness. After the establishment of human consciousness and god consciousness, Celie achieve the goal of ideological emancipation and accomplish the regain of independent consciousness. All of these provide a necessary foundation to Celie's self-empowerment. Next, Celie regain independent ability through self-empowerment. By means of women's mutual assistance and economic independence, Celie establish her own identity and status; besides, Celie has a new understanding of God gradually. God is not that white old man, god is"in my mind", and god is love. After the rebuilt of independent consciousness and independent ability, not only in spirit, but also in the practical action, Celie accomplishes independence. After the growth and transformation of Celie, she is equal to men, meanwhile, manages to live in relative harmony and coexistence with the black men.As a matter of fact, the process that Celie search herself and god is just the process that she establish and fulfill herself. To Celie, it is the same thing. Both of them attempt to get rid of oppression and bondage, and achieve liberation and independence. The ultimate aim is to fight for the black females'independence.
