The Translation Of Culture-Loaded Expressions In Fortress Besieged In Light Of Translation As Adaptation And Selection

In Fortress Besieged by Qian Zhongshu, there are lots of Chinese culture-loaded expressions, which make the language in this novel very expressive. With the development of cross-cultural communication and globalization, it is increasingly important to introduce traditional Chinese culture through translation into other countries, for this will help facilitate mutual understanding between China and other countries. Culture-loaded Expressions play an important part in cross-culture communication. Therefore, to study how to deal with culture-loaded expressions in Chinese-English translation is a very effective way to help translators do better in translating Chinese literature.Translation theory in the past half century has developed significantly, and translation researchers are starting to pay more attention to other related theories. Hu Gengshen, by introducing Darwin's ideas of "adaptation" and "selection" in evolution into translation studies, has proposed a theory that approaches translation as adaptation and selection, hoping to re-examine translation from a new perspective and effectively guide translation practice.According to Hu, Translation is considered as the translator's adaptation and selection in a translational eco-environment. A translational eco-environment refers to the worlds of the source text and the source/target language, the linguistic, communicative, cultural and social aspects of translation, as well as the author, the client, and the readers. Within the theoretical framework of the theory, the process of translation results in the production of a target text through biological selection by means of the translator's adaptation to the eco-environment and the translator's selection of both the degree of adaptation and the form of the final target text in expressions of the Darwinian principle of biological selection. Hu believes that his theory will highlight adaptation and selection as aspects of translational activities and hopefully add new dimensions to translation studies.This thesis, by adopting Hu's theory as a tool, and the culture-loaded expressions in Fortress Besieged translated by Jenne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao as the object, analyzes the source text and the target text from the perspective of the translator's adaptation and selection in order to find out how the translator adapts to the original style, to the western readers' psychology and cultural difference, and how they transmit the original information to the target readers.
