With the rapid development of social and economic globalization, Chinese people not only want to know the world but also are eager to be known by the outside. As a matter of fact, English is an important tool for international communication and exchange of information. Under the profound influence of Chinese culture, thinking patterns and social norms, Chinglish emerged as an unavoidable in the Chinese context. Though it is defined as deformed English for violating English rules and ignoring the native customs, we cannot ignore the typical language phenomenon or try to avoid it in the learning process. Instead, much attention should be paid to the study of Chinglish since it causes many misunderstandings and much confusion in actual communication and even blocks the effective exchange between the two cultures.The majority of English speakers in China are students, and among them, non-English majors account for the greater part. When they enter the society after graduation, they turn into English users. Consequently, the effect of learning in class has a great impact on their actual use of the language in practice. The current situation of the performance of non-English majors'is far from satisfactory, especially in the case of their oral work. The fact is many students are good at memorizing English words, and learn grammatical rules instead of focusing on how to use the language effectively. The purpose for them to study English is passing exams such as CET 4 or CET 6 only. Even though they can pass different exams at high scores, when they are asked to speak or talk in English, they speak Chinglish.In the thesis, the analysis about Chinglish has been summarized and the comparison between Chinglish and China English has been made. Reviewing the development history, we learned that a series of studies about Chinglish have been carried out from different angels in recent years, but most scholars and researchers are mainly focusing on the study of the written works such as translation or composition formulated by students. The few studies focusing on oral works are unsystematically scattered. Thus, the thesis aims at analyzing the oral works of non-English majors and finding the underlying reasons accounting for the occurrence of Chinglish.With the purpose of that, the thesis starts from finding the main problems in the oral works of non-English majors. In this part, the research is carefully designed by selection of subjects being tested, implementing of the relevant methods and detailed implementing of different step of testing. Based on that, the general results of the research are discussed on Chinglish at lexical, grammatical, idiomatic and cultural level. The author also use a questionnaire as a research instrument to investigate students attitude to the importance of English oral work, awareness of mother tongue influence to English oral work and their individual learning strategies of oral English and so on. Based on the evidence of that, the underlying reasons are further discussed from two aspects. In the subjective aspect, differences in the thinking mode between Chinese and English have been discussed in great detail. Besides, the cultural influence and the impact of factors in psychology are explored in order to uncover the inner and outer reasons of Chinglish.The thesis ends with some pedagogical suggestions for College English teaching and learning hoping to serve the improving the English competence of Chinese speakers.
