Imagery:From Su Tong's Novels To Film Adaptations

Film and literature have always been closely intertwined with each other,and how to make the two coexist harmoniously in the age of images has become a hot topic for the current academic research.As one of the contemporary writers popular among the film directors,Su Tong's novels are filled with imageries and can be easily expressed with the cinematic languages in terms of visual presentation and connotation of ideas.As a result,Su Tong's novel has become an example of successful adaptation of literary works for films in the age of film and television.This article focuses on the presentations of the different imageries in Su Tong's novels and their film adaptations.The article consists of five parts.First,the article begins with the introduction of the reason for the selection of this topic,the current state of research on the imageries of Su Tong's novels and film adaptations at home and abroad,and defines the term "imagery",which is the focus of this paper,and elaborates on the ideas,research methods and innovative points of this article.The first chapter focuses on the characteristics of the imageries in Su Tong's novels.By my closely examining the novels' contexts,the characteristics of the imageries in the novels are comprehensively analyzed from the imageries of the novel from the aspects of the imageries of the narrative function,the image of the ugly human nature and the mysterious desire atmosphere.The second chapter analyzes the presentation of the imageries in the films adapted from Su Tong's novels,which explores how the imageries in the film adaptations are presented with the audiovisual languages in light of the visualization of figurative imagery,the dramatization of narrative imagery and the poetic expression of cinematic concept.The third chapter is about the changes in the imageries when Su Tong's novels have been adapted for films,by analyzing the characteristics and presentations of the imageries in the novels and their counterparts in the adapted films,me analyze the changes in the imageries in the film adaptations as compared to the novels',what are the mechanisms of such changes,and what are the effects created by these changes,in terms of the visualized presentations of the film imageries,the flattening of the figurative imageries in the films and the limitations in the expression of the film imageries.This article is ended with the analysis of the impact brought about by film to the fictional literature with the consideration of the characteristics of the current era of image consumption to find a way of sustainable development for both novels and their film adaptions.
