With the rapid development of tourism in China, millions of foreign tourists come to China, which raises a demand for well-translated guide's commentaries. Therefore, it is necessary to research into the topic of the translation. The thesis attempts to apply the Skopostheorie of Translation to the Chinese-English translation of guides'commentary. Within the framework of Skopostheorie, the prime principle determining any translation process is the purpose of the overall translational action. Along with the analysis of the text type of guide's commentary, the general translation purpose and the translation brief, the author thinks that the C-E translation of guide's commentary aims at promoting foreign tourists'understanding of China and its culture by means of guides'presentation. Based upon this purpose, the translator is required to be fully aware of the comprehensive characteristics (informative, expressive and operative) of guide's commentaries and strictly observe the corresponding translation brief. In addition, the author conducts a critical evaluation of the translated guides'commentaries of Xi'an in terms of the culture and linguistic translation problems. Following the theoretical and practical analysis, the author gets that the C-E translation of guide's commentary should follow two major principles:to be tourist-oriented and aiming at promoting Chinese culture. Finally, through using corresponding strategies, such as transliteration plus explanation, addition, omission and adaptation, the author attempts to prove that the Skopostheorie is applicable to the C-E translation of guide's commentary, and that this theory is feasible enough to be used as the translator's guide to the translation of Chinese tourism texts into English. It is hoped that the study will be of some help for the improvement of the translation of Chinese tourist materials, be of a little help for the promotion of the development of our tourism, and can authentically enable guide-interpreters to be real "envoys of friendship and disseminators of culture".
