On The Translation Of Thundertorm From The Perspective Of Spopostheorie

Drama is a gold in the literary mine. And the translation of classical dramas between different languages has been carried on for many centuries. Drama is universally regarded as a complex art, with its play text being literature and its outcome being a performing art. Thus, the duality of drama is a contradiction in the presence of drama translators. Lei Yu, the famous dramatist Cao Yu's masterpiece, also stands out as one of the notable milestones in the history of Chinese drama. In recent years, the studies of Lei Yu are mostly concerned about Lei Yu itself, but very few are focused on its English version.For Skopostheorie, translation is a purposeful intercultural action whose main purpose determines the whole translation process and the choice of translation strategies and methods so that a functionally adequate target text can be produced. As a great breakthrough away the traditional theory of equivalence and an important complement to translation theories, Skopostheorie opens up a new perspective for the translation practice and study. Although Skopostheorie was proposed in as early as 1980s, drama translations discussed within the framework of Skopostheorie were few.Attempting to do some research on Wang Zuoliang's English versions of Thunderstorm, the thesis makes a study of the application of Skopostheorie in the translation based on the Skopostheorie. The author analyzes the purpose and strategies employed by the translator in translating Thunderstorm with descriptive method adopted by Skopostheorie. From the aspects of Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the author particularizes Wang's English version. On the basis of this, the analysis arrives at the conclusion that Wang's translation of Thunderstorm fulfills the intended purpose of introducing this classic to the Western receivers, spreading the excellent Chinese culture toward the world, bridging the different culture between the West and the East, showing the world how great and kind Chinese working people are and how they remove the three big mountains suppressing on them. At last, the study confirms the truth that Skopostheorie can really explain and solve the phenomena and problems in the translation practice, thus it has practically directive function.
