The heavy-colored painting was the earliest painting type of the traditional Chinese painting, when it had reached its greatest time during Tang and Song Dynasty, it was replaced by other painting types later due to many reasons. It was restricted by its taste and expression and getting weaker in terms of color and materials.The modern heavy-colored painting is rooted in the traditional Chinese heavy-colored painting, which is the extension and development of traditional Chinese painting. Nowadays, as the material civilization has got a rapid development, the modern heavy-colored painting has been revived in color and materials through the modem painting painter's efforts. Traditional Chinese heavy-colored painting is open to all the other painting types, taking in the excellence of which in history. This is a very important element for the modern heavy-colored painting. The modem Chinese painters learned the idea of color from Impressionism and Japanese painting, trying their best to explore the new development of the modern heavy-colored painting. Japanese painters learned from western paintings and fused with domestic art to create the unique contemporary painting style. This is a good example that Chinese painting should learn. At the same time, besides studying the traditional painting materials, they researched and made some new painting materials, introduced Japanese painting materials to strengthened the expression of the modem heavy-colored painting. While learning and absorbing, modem Chinese painters should combine these foreign stuff with local national culture of beauty.Under the multicultural background, the modern heavy-colored painters made the modem heavy-colored painting show a thriving scene through putting individual life experience, emotional and aesthetic into their works. This article not only discussed the development of the modem heavy-colored painting in color and materials, also had research about the new form and new methods of the modem color paintings from the perspectives of the painter's work style and innovative techniques, meanwhile, discussed the development of the color and materials from a practical point. Notably, the modem Chinese painters should grasp the relationship between innovation and nationality in the process of innovation and development, and put forward the growth of the modem heavy-colored paintings based on the cultural connotation of Chinese painting.
