During the past more than2000years’ historical process of Chinese painting, comparedwith western painting, color seems to be appurtenant and undeveloped as one of the mostimportant representation of painting. Since Song dynasty and Yuan dynasty, influenced bytraditional cultural philosophy, Chinese painting focused on Chinese wash ink freehandbrushwork, advocating "pen and ink" and spirit, ignoring representation of color. As the spiritrepresentation of the painting style of the literati, ink had been developed and praised greatly. On the contrary, Chinese heavy colored painting, as the delegate of the works of craftsman, had a chill welcome, reached its lowest ebb at one time, and was welcome up to the recenttimes. In fact, there were many classic treatise works about color in Chinese ancient theory ofpainting. Among these works, the most famous is “application of colors according tocategories” presented by XIE He in his “appreciating record of ancient paintings”. Laterafterwards, it has been one of the most important considerations of valuing and appreciatingpainting in history, and has played mastery reaction leading role in the representation ways ofcolor in Chinese traditional painting. In this thesis, starting from the view of “application ofcolors according to categories”, combining with Chinese traditional cultural philosophy, representation ways of color in Chinese modern heavy colored painting is analyzed andresearched in depth on the basis of research of color development of Chinese traditionalheavy colored painting.
