There are many self-regulation behaviors in our daily lives. Many non-adaptive outcomes (e.g., alcohol addiction, eating disorder, emotional disorder) are because of the failure of self regulation process. The strength model of self regulation brings some explainations for these phenomenons. According to the strength model, self-regulation functions like a muscle. Acts of self-regulation require that one exercise one's "ego strength", which refers to the unitary, depletable, and renewable resource underlying all acts of deliberate self-regulation. It is important to know that self-regulatory strength can be depleted. To the degree that individuals have recently drawn on their self-regulatory resources to accomplish a self-regulatory task, they will have fewer such resources available for subsequent self-regulatory tasks. Indeed, this state of ego depletion will increase the likelihood that they will experience self-regulatory failure on a second act of self-regulation attempted shortly after the first. As an imporpant composition of self regulation, cognitive function is thought to be the foundation of self-regulation behaviors. In that case, it is very important to everyday's life.On the other hand, attachmet is the most important emotional bond of every infant in the world. The relationship between one and his/her attachment figure has influences on many aspects of his/her life, especially on the regulation of emotion, stress coping and other self-regulation behaviors. The broaden-and-build cycle of attachment security promote positive self-and other-perspective, prosocial values, mental health, both dispositional and temporarily.Method:Across four studies, we examined in two different situations of ego-depletion, whether dispositional and temporarily enhanced attachment security (attachment priming) can boost participants'cognitive functioning. In Study1, first,57college students completed the Experiences in Close Relationships scales (ECR). Second, they received an experimental hypothetical situation to arouse stressful and anxious feelings (made participants ego-depletion) or a neutral situation. Third, they all finished a Stroop task as the performance of cognitive function. In Study2, first,55college students completed the ECR. Second, they all received an experimental hypothetical situation to arouse stressful and anxious feelings (made participants ego-depletion). Third, they were divided into two groups; participants in the attachment-security-priming group recalled their memories about being supported and helped by an intimacy person (attachment figure); participants in the other group recalled their memories about doing something with an acquaintance. Fourthly, they all finished the Stroop task as the performance of cognitive function. In Study3, first,57college students completed the Experiences in Close Relationships scales (ECR). Second, they followed the direction to control their attantion on a man in one video (made participants ego-depletion) or they could freely watch the same video. Third, they all finished a Stroop task as the performance of cognitive function. In Study4, first,63college students completed the ECR. Second, they followed the direction to control their attantion on a man in one video (made participants ego-depletion). Results:â‘ In the stressful depletion condition, dispositional attachment security can boost one's cognitive function.â‘¡In the stressful depletion condition, attachment security priming can boost one's cognitive function.â‘¢In the attention-control depletion condition, dispositional attachment security can boost one's cognitive function.â‘£In the attention-control depletion condition, attachment security priming can not boost one's cognitive function.
