The climate of Guizhou which is located in the southwest of China is comfortable to live and suitable for flower-and-tree growth, which provides unique natural conditions for the creation of flower-and-bird painting. However, due to geographic location far from the centre of China, it lacks cultural influence of the Central Plain. From Tang's flower-and-bird painting taken as a stand-alone section and gradually mature in the art to its development during Ming and Qing dynasty, the flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou has been unknown. People living in a certain area will be affected by natural and human factors of the region. Although an artist lives far from his hometown, hometown's culture has still a great influence on his psychology and spirit. Therefore, the produce of art works not only depends on the "time spirit" but also relies on "local culture". The flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou is closely related to time spirit and local culture of Guizhou.Twenties century later, the introduction of Western thought, the improvement of traffic conditions and other factors made Guizhou have more chance to communicate with the outside of the world, and a number of outstanding artists from Guizhou such as Yao Mangfu, Qiu Shiming have played a significant role in the painting of whole nation. The flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou has been really developed after the war because Guizhou is relatively stable as the rear of the war. A large number of artists have come to Guizhou and stayed there, which promoted the development of Guizhou's freehand and flower-and-bird painting. Among these artists, some are from Guizhou province, and some are from other province, represented by Wang Yufu, Fang Xiaoshi and Song Yinke. They learnt painting from outside but their creative works were primarily formed in Guizhou. Besides, they have cultivated a large number of great artists. As the pioneer of flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou, they have great influence in whole country. This article takes Wang Yufu, Fang Xiaoshi and Song Yinke whose paintings are regarded as representatives of Guizhou flower-and-bird painting of twenty century as examples, and analyses the reasons why flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou has little impacts in whole nation. Guizhou is a province gathering many nationalities; and the rich and splendid folk arts play a significant part in cultural pattern. From ancient time, there have been painters taking folk arts as examples. Painters from Guizhou also take folk arts of Guizhou's minority as examples. But the flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou has been little impacts in whole country for thousands of years. It is weak foundation of minority culture and far relation with Han's culture that cannot promote the development of the painting. Based on the modern painters who heritage the tradition and form their own painting style but lack overall style, the author of the paper tries to create flower-and-bird painting with characteristics of Guizhou's regional culture, making a few contribution to Freehand and flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou.This article analyses from natural conditions, geographical location, cultural heritage, summarizing the development of freehand and flower-and-bird painting and art characteristics of20century in Guizhou, present situation and future development, to establish the foundation for further study of freehand and flower-and-bird painting of Guizhou.
