Narrations Of The Women In Shanghai Enemy-Occupied Area

At the beginning of 1940s, the Japanese invaders and its puppet regimes executes violent political, economic and cultural ruling in China, Shanghai suffered from economic recession and prices soaring, people's life became unbearable. During this special historical period, for these intellectual women, who were baptised by the May 4th Movement, obtained concepts of liberty and equality, how would they survive? What kinds of predicament would they encounter when they making their living? Answers to these questions will be found in this thesis. Suqing, the super popular female writer in Shanghai Enemy-occupied Area at that time, took the lead in describing the life of the intellectual women in Shanghai Enemy-occupied Area. She drew the outline of the intellectual women's life through depicting their daily life. For this reason, I, the author of this thesis, choose Suqing as the object of study, will illustrate and analyse the theme of Suqing's works, then reveal the intellectual women's predicaments in a comprehensive and authentic way.The thesis includes three parts: the Introduction, the Body and the Epilogue.In the introduction part, I summarize the creative contents and theme of the Chinese Feminine Literature, highlight the significance of Suqing's Feminine Literature works in the history of the Chinese Literature. The body is composed of three sections: By integrating the social environment description of the Shanghai Enemy-occupied Area in 1940s and Suqing's personal experience, the first section briefly introduce the background why Suqing would take intellectual women's living predicaments as her literary concern. the second section do a detailed analysis on Suqing's works, will demonstrate the intellectual women's living predicaments spiritually, materially and physiologically through three aspects: "Obtaining the Power", "Making a Living", "Satisfying the Desire ". Obtaining the power is to meet the requirement of self development for these intellectual women; Making a living is a protection if they fail to obtain the power; Satisfying the desire is to fulfill their eagerness for various desires. The third section focus on the analysis of how can these intellectual women will be rescued? Two aspects will be discussed: Firstly, to dissect the source where their predicaments come from; Secondly, to analyse Suqing's deliberation on the freedom of the intellectual women. The Epilogue pointed out the boundedness and significance of Suqing's works on the theme of the intellectual women's predicaments.The intellectual women in Shanghai Enemy-occupied Area is a special group of people, Suqing's works veritably reappear their living conditions, objectively reveal their predicaments. As prolocutor of intellectual women in Shanghai Enemy-occupied Area, Suqing's works have high value.
