Tibetan Buddhism is not only the main religion of the Tibetan people, but also an important part of traditional Tibetan culture. Buddhist ceremony is the primary religious practices of Tibetan Buddhism, also functions as the external manifestations of religious belief. Among all kinds of religious ceremonies held by Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, exorcism during the end of year is regarded as the most sacred religious activities, in which a series of religious activities would be carried out by monks to drive out evil spirit, such as chanting scripture, grand-scale sacrifice, making offerings to the Three Jewels, and exorcism dancing. At the end of Buddhist ceremony, Linga (symbol and miniature of demon and evil) would be burned into ashes, signifying getting rid of inauspicious spirit like catastrophe and sickness, which marks the climax of the exorcism. Buddhist ceremony plays a significant role in Tibetan philosophy and cultural life of native aborigines.As a branch of Tibetan Buddhism, Jonangpa sect features as unique doctrine, which purports Madhyamika and advocates meditations on wrong view concerning unrealness of the attributes. This school of Tibetan Buddhism is characterized with the Kalachakra Tantra, and prestigious for Buddha's work in saving by his preaching and making offerings to the Three Jewels in the means of choiring. In the exorcism ceremony of Jonangpa sect at the end of the year, choiring by means of vocal music and instrumental music is combined with other religious services, which is perceived as a kind of art appreciation, as well as a part of religious practice reflecting doctrine of Buddhism. In this sense, music and religious ceremony are inseparable whole.This paper mainly probes into music and other cultural activities in Buddhist ceremonies, based on the case study of Dzamtang Chorje Monastery of Jonangpa sect. on the basis of first-handed material collected by the author during the research, this paper attempts to analyze generality and individuality of music in Buddhist ceremony by the aid of related documentation. Furthermore, it strives to analyze external form, internal logos, self-cognition and enlightenment when penetrating deeply into the structure and characteristics of it. Eventually, this paper attempts to explore unique connotation of Buddhism culture from music of religious ceremonies.This paper includes four chapters:The first chapter introduces cultural background, including origin and dissemination of Jonangpa sect, history and status quo of Dzamtang Chorje Monastery, institution of Tibetan monastery, tantric practice and religious ceremonies.The second chapter introduces formation of exorcism ceremony of Dzamtang Chorje Monastery, contents, purpose and significance of Buddhist ceremony. In addition, field recording of exorcism and religious ceremony at the end of the year would be presented.The third chapter analyzes music form of exorcism ceremony. Specifically, it respectively analyzes vocal music and instrumental music in choiring according to classification of Tibetan Buddhist music.The fourth chapter elaborates cultural connotation of exorcism ceremony and music in Buddhist ceremony. From different perspectives, this paper expounds on significance of Buddhist ceremony both in internal notion and external form. The significance of music in Buddhist ceremony would be revealed in its construction on diapason and embodiment on Buddhism spirit.
