A Study On The Translation Of Vulgar Language In The Novel There's Nothing I Can Do When I Think Of You Late At Night

This thesis talks about the English translation of vulgar language in literary works, taking the novel There Is Nothing I Can Do When I Think of You Late at Night as an example. The study of vulgar language hasn't attracted the attention of scholars until the recent decades for the nature of vulgar language itself so that researches on vulgar language and its translation have not been done systematically. Based on previous studies, the thesis makes classifications of Chinese vulgar language and English vulgar language, analyzing their pragmatic functions in general. Then the translation methods employed in the translation of vulgar language from Chinese to English by the translator are discussed under the theoretical framework of Eugene Nida's equivalence theory. In this thesis, documents and examples are the main devices to illustrate the translation strategies adopted by the translator.By careful study, it is found that the principles of formal equivalence are applicable if the Chinese vulgar language and the corresponding English vulgar language have the same or similar meaning and cultural background. If not, the principles of dynamic equivalence will be used. Some translation approaches are concluded in the end as well.This is a tentative study on the translation of vulgar language from the angle of Nida's formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence, which provides a new view for the translation of vulgar language. It is hoped this study will contribute to the later research in this field.
