On Equivalence And Non-Equivalence In Translation

With the ever deepening of translation research, equivalence and non-equivalence, as an important element in evaluating the quality of translation, began to attract people's eyeball with new point of view.The previous researches are theory-centered, and mainly focus on the fact that there's no absolute equivalence in translation. They rarely go deep into the practical measures to solve the contradiction between equivalence and non-equivalence in translation, which leaves a large space for this thesis to make a deep research and explanation.In this thesis, based on the combination of theory with practice, I give a brief introduction of the existing theories and form my own point of view. By citing some practical examples out of years'accumulation in English study, I put forward some methods to properly coordinate the dialectic relation between equivalence and non-equivalence so as to achieve the most desirable effect in translation.In structure, this thesis first gives a brief introduction of the existing research findings on the equivalence in translation practices, then analyzes the factors cause non-equivalence in translation from the point of language, context, culture, and etc. And based on these analysis results, it further explains how to coordinate between equivalence and non-equivalence at language level and culture level properly by citing some practical examples. At the end of this thesis, the conclusion is drawn that the translation is a contradictory unity of equivalence and non-equivalence. The absolute existence of non-equivalence does not mean the vain in efforts in pursuit of equivalence. The researches on equivalence actually deepen and perfect the understanding of equivalence in all aspects, and broaden the concept of equivalence from a planar and abstract one into a solid composite with rich meaning as well as a multi-dimensional set of evaluation values on translation quality. The translation process is not only the coordination or negotiation of the two aspects, but also the never-ending pursuit of equivalence.
