Mongolian traditional costumes are part of the grassland culture, and one of the valuable contributions of Mongols in human history and civilization. The craftsmanship of Mongolian traditional costumes is one of Mongolian important intangible cultural heritages.This paper makes an account of the making of Mongolian traditional costumes and explores characteristics of craftsmanship-inheriting on the base of fieldwork in central and western regions of Inner Mongolia. Three places are chosen as fieldwork locations, Wushen County in Ordos, Xilinhot and Hohhot.This paper consists of five parts.The Introduction gives a brief overview of the research purpose and significance of the topic, the methods used, relevant studies as well as concepts mentioned in this paper.In the first chapter, the cultural soil of Mongolian traditional costumes in history and today is illustrated. The secret of it in Mongolian traditional costumes wearing order, steadiness, craftsmanship, embroidery and major design, which are well suited to nomadic life style and culture. Some core essence has been shown in the long historical development of Mongolian traditional costumes, such as deel (Mongolian robe), color preferences in white and blue, gorgeous ornaments, exquisite trim and embroidery, as well as the feature of inclusiveness.Chapter II describes the present making of Mongolian traditional costumes in central and western regions of Inner Mongolia by making a comparison between the three field work locations, from the aspects of inheritor, place for making and Mongolian costumes being made today.The third chapter analyzes characteristics of craftsmanship-inheriting of Mongolian traditional costumes as well as some new trends appear today. There are mainly two ways of craftsmanship-inheriting, by women in family and by apprenticing, and the latter becomes predominant. In addition, some new trends have appeared in the making of Mongolian traditional costumes, such as diversified makers and specialization of craftsmanship.At last, the paper points out the problems existing in the craftsmanship-inheriting of Mongolian traditional costumes. In the protection of craftsmanship, the protection of inheritor lies in the core, the cultural space should be paid due attention to, and the way of protection via producing should be adopted.
