Task-based approach was put forward in the 1980s by some foreign language teaching methods researchers and second language acquisition researchers in large and experiment on the basis of summing up "learning by doing" which is a very influential learning mode. At present, many foreign researches proved that task-based approach plays an important role in cultivating students' ability and promoting students' comprehensive quality. In recent years, China's high school New Standard English(2003) clearly advocate that task-based approach should be implemented to improve students'comprehensive ability of using language skills. Since then, high school English teaching materials consider the "task" as the center and reset the content and syllabus. As is known, many experts at home and abroad did a lot of empirical research on task-based approach in cultivating students' interest and improving the students' learning ability. However, it appears deficient in the study of application of task-based approach in improvement of the students' English reading comprehension in senior high school. Thus, this research is of theoretical significance and practical value.This experiment chooses two parallel classes randomly (N=104) and the experiment lasts half an year. The two classes are randomly divided into two groups---Experimental Group (EG) and Control Group (CG) and the EG adopts task-based teaching methods while CG uses traditional teaching methods. These are both qualitative and quantitative analyses in the study. The data are collected through questionnaire, interview and pre-test and post-test. And the SPSS 16.0 software is used to analyze the collected data quantitatively. The result shows that there is some significant difference in students'English reading proficiency between the experimental group who receive task-based approach and the control group who are taught by traditional methods. As is seen, task-based approach is very effective in improving high school students'English reading ability. It can not only improve high school students' English reading interest to a certain extent, but also improve their English reading ability.Finally, this paper puts forward some relevant suggestions for the study of task-based approach.
