According to the new English Curriculum Criteria, the goal of elementary education is to encourage and train students' interest in English study, make students build their confidence, form good learning habits and effective learning strategies, develop their autonomous learning ability and the cooperation spirit to lay the good foundation for their lifelong learning and development . This course nature has already closely combined the usage of learning strategies and autonomous learning ability: learning strategy is the fundamental on improving learning efficiency and developing the ability of autonomous learning.Autonomous learning ability is the learners need required by oneself and their desire to learn the content and the ability to control the learning process. The thesis based on the cognitive theory and English Curriculum Criteria, analyzes the use frequency of several learning strategies by students, and how to improve learner autonomy by strengthening the use frequency of learning strategies . Through test analysis and questionnaire, a survey on the Second High School in liaoning Panjin city was investigated.The survey indicates that the use frequency of learning strategies by students in high school was not satisfying. The different strategies used by good learners and poor learners lead to the difference between English scores. There are also some differences on the frequency using of learning strategies. Based on these facts, this paper presents some suggestions on using learning strategies to cultivate and improve students' ability of autonomous learning.
