The new curriculum standards for high school English puts forward higher requirement on senior-high students in their English reading ability, demanding students acquire comprehensive reading skills, and it has been found the traditional reading teaching method can't fulfill the requirement. Considering the situation, the standards encourages the task-based language teaching model (TBLT) in reading classroom, a teaching method that puts its focus on training students'ability of using the language. This model means to help students use English to do things, acquiring the language while completing the task by experiencing, practicing, participating, communicating and cooperating. So in recent years, this model has been applied to many reading classrooms, and the study of its feasibility and efficiency has been brought to the front. In autumn,2005, Advance with English became the textbook for high school students in Jiangsu. Enlightened by the new idea in the standards, quite a few teachers began to handle this new textbook with TBLT model in reading classroom. Everything being at the trial stage, surveys studying the current situation were necessary, and that's why this present study was done. The study took 117 senior-high sophomores and 31 high school English teachers as its subjects, looking into the general situation and existing problems of task-based English reading classroom by means of questionnaire survey and class observation. The result shows most teachers do have a clear idea of TBLT; they are able to create a student-centered classroom; they are capable of designing well-considered tasks; and students are largely interested in TBLE. In addition, the study also finds some problems with current TBLT classroom that are due to both subjective and objective factors, and later comes up with some solutions, hoping to help improve English reading teaching and thus the students'reading ability to reach the level demanded by the standards.
