Currently, many students in high school have common difficulty in vocabulary acquisition. They learn vocabulary on a surface level but can not pick out proper words promptly in their oral and written practice. According to this plight, the new high school curriculum standard comes up with new requirements for students, which are no longer confined to identification, recognition and understanding of words but focus more on practical performance. The new. requirements pose a new challenge in vocabulary teaching. How to step out of the situation of low-efficiency in vocabulary teaching and enable students to achieve native-like fluency and authenticity are the pressing problems in the field of language teaching. Chunk, combining vocabulary, grammar and context, is the key to language fluency and authenticity. Therefore it is considered to be the ideal unit in language teaching. The research on chunk serves as a breakthrough in solving the difficulty of vocabulary acquisition for high school students.Based on the previous study, I classify chunk into three kinds: word-level chunks, phrase-level chunks and sentence-level chunks according to their inner compactness. I survey the situation of chunk acquisition in form of translation exercises from two normal classes in some middle school in Nanjing. After comparing the results of the two classes, I find that among all 48 target chunks there are 8 chunks with totally different acquisition results.1 trace corresponding teaching behavior from my record of the two teachers to explore the relationship between chunk acquisition and teaching manners. Statistics show that the results of chunk acquisitions are basically related to the chunk's own property with a decreasing acquisition ratio from word-level to sentence-level, and teachers' way to deal with chunks in class. Teachers should arouse students' awareness of chunk, practice chunks in context, design various exercises and practice step by step, explain the subtle difference between chunks and grammar issues within chunk and build an easygoing atmosphere in class. These will contribute to chunk acquisition, hence the key to chunk teaching.
