The Optional Course first appeared in China in the 1920s. But it was not until the 1990s that China started the course formally. During the first years it was neglected by most schools due to China's testing system. In 2003 China Ministry of Education issued "the National English Curriculum Standards", in which the Optional Course is demanded, aiming at carrying out quality education and creating more chances to practice English. Also, the Optional Course in the standards is supposed to motivate students' interests in learning English and provide more chances for their personalized development. In the background of Curriculum reform, Education theorists are more concerned with Optional Course. English Optional Course has become more and more important.This essay focuses on English Optional Course. The author of this paper does researches on the implementation of Optional Course in a senior high school in Baixia District of Nanjing and find out the problems in performing it. On the bases of these researches, the author would be able to give some valuable advice.The main body of this essay consists of four big parts.Introduction in the first part describes the research background, content, method and meaning of the curriculum, define the conception of Optional Course and English Optional Course. It also analyses the data at home and abroad. Students have a large choice of Optional Course in Europe and the United States. And diversity evaluations are advocated.The second part discusses the reasons of English Optional Course. Optional English language practice can create more opportunities to help students to consolidate, expand and deepen the knowledge learned in the classroom. English Optional Course can improve listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. It can further stimulate their interest in learning foreign languages, making students more confidence, active thinking, intellectual development as well as expanding their knowledge and horizons, so that students can get a full development. Diversity can provide students with choice and development of the personality space. Therefore, the English Optional Courses can create students the need for physical and mental development. The relationship between Compulsory Course courses and Optional Courses is mutual penetration and interaction of organic unity, Creation of multiple intelligences theory is the theoretical basis of English elective course, "the new curriculum standards for English" is the policy basis of English electives.The third part is the research part. This study investigated the Baixia District 7 high school English Optional situation. This study used questionnaires to survey students on the attitude of Optional Courses in English, with the interview survey of the views of English teachers of Optional Courses.Students have high expectations of Optional Courses in English, but because of pressure of college entrance examination, students do not pay enough attention to the quality of teaching and not satisfied with the arrangements. Because of the pressure on English studies, teachers have not paid enough attention to it. Some teachers can not do the teaching of Optional Courses in English well.The fourth part is some suggestions on the implementation of Optional Courses the author gives according to the analysis of the data. Three proposals were put forward. Firstly we should recognize the significance and role of Optional Courses, changing schools and English teachers'vague understanding of the elective course. Secondly we can enhance the secondary school English teachers and teachers in the pilot system of specialized Optional Courses. Thirdly, we should manage the reforms to strengthen and further improve the management and evaluation system of English Optional Courses.The appendix provides a survey released by the author in the questionnaire and interview outline.
