It is one of the important parts of China's Junior Middle School English teaching to improve students' reading ability. English reading skills are understood as playing an important role in enhancing reading capability, which also exercises impacts on other abilities of the learners including listening, speaking and writing. It can be claimed that the effectiveness of teaching of English reading is closely related to the outcomes and quality of English teaching. But as far as many middle school English teachers are concerned, reading is a time-consuming and effort-consuming task, which has been a hard nut for both teachers and students to crack. This situation justifies the necessity for the research on the effectiveness of English reading teaching in junior middle schools.This case study aims at how to improve the effectiveness of junior English reading teaching through literature study, written survey and interview. Based on the results of the survey and interview, the author, first of all, tries to identify the major existing problems with the current junior English reading teaching. After that, she undertakes a teaching experiment guided by task-based English reading teaching model in two classes, where she was doing one-semester internship, with the help of related reading theories and on the basis of the new curricular criteria. The results of the experiment demonstrate that task-based reading teaching model is not only feasible and practicable but also conducive to the enhancement of students'reading speed and reading ability.In brief, the findings of this research are of some pedagogical value to the teaching of junior English reading in the future.
