In recent years, in the teaching of English reading classroom, people have paid more and more attention to study the task-based reading approach. It is a classroom activity which is goal-oriented and learner-centered. Its main content is to help the students communicate by using the target language and finish the task which the teacher asks by sharing out the work and cooperating with one another. In different aspects, many scholars have studied it--task-based reading teaching. They thought that the task-based reading approach could not only help learners improve their reading abilities but also impel them grasp the reading strategy and methods. Reading is a very important skill in the process of learning language. For the teaching activities in language class, reading is also a very important part. For the readers, the understanding in reading is built on the basis of combining the information which is prestored in their mind and the other information in the reading texts. Now, the improving about the reading ability of junior middle school students is an important aim in English teaching in the junior middle school. However, the teaching of reading still needs to be improved in many junior middle schools. So, to help the students improve their abilities in reading, this paper tries to study the effectiveness of task-based reading teaching approach. This paper is based on task-based teaching theory and reading theory. The aim is to probe into the effectiveness of the task-based reading approach to teaching of reading by studying the task-based reading approach. It tries to answer these two questions:1) Is it effective to use the task-based reading teaching approach in the teaching of English reading on Grade Eight?2) If it works to use the task-based reading teaching approach, how should we build feasible teaching approach?After twenty-six weeks’ teaching practice, the writer finds that the reading ability of the students in the experimental class have become better than the ones’ in the other class. At the same time, the students in the experimental class have also got better scores. It proves that the task-based reading approach in teaching of reading is active and efficient to improve students’ reading ability and the comprehensive ability to use language. On the basis of multiplying the research literature and experiment, the writer also gives a teaching model about the task-based reading approach.The paper falls into seven chapters including the introduction and the conclusion. Chapter one serves as an introduction, which gives a brief description of the background, problems, purpose, methods and the meaning of the research. It also introduces the design of the structure of this thesis.Chapter two presents the literature review. It summarizes the definition and classification of the task-based reading approach and analyses theoretical basis of task-based reading. It also analyses the research status of improving the students’ English reading ability in the Middle School by using the task-based reading approach both at home and abroad in the recent years.Chapter three is the situation analysis of English independent reading teaching in the Middle School in China. It introduces the situation of English reading teaching in the Middle School recently. It analyses English reading in daily teaching from English reading situation about the students in our school. It discusses the limits about improving the students’ English reading abilities of traditional English reading teaching.Chapter four is the application of the task-based reading approach. It summarizes the application of the task-based reading approach by taking a Teaching example of a reading class as a model.Chapter five is the experimental research. It introduces research objective, research hypothesis, object of study, research techniques and research process.Chapter six is the result of the experiment and data analysis. The statistic software SPSS19.0is used to test the previous, mid-term and afterwards tests about English reading in the experiment. Investigated information is organized and deduced. The data of investigation paper before, in and after the experiment are compared and analyzed. At last, a conclusion is drawn:the task-based reading approach can improve the students’ reading ability with efficiency.Chapter seven is the conclusion in which the result of the research is summarized. It sums up the discovery about the empirical research:the task-based reading approach can improve the students’reading ability with efficiency. It also points out the practical effect of the author’s research on the reading in junior middle school as well as its limitation. At last, the paper puts up some suggestions about junior middle school English reading teaching from now on and points out orientation of further studies..
