Youth values study in the context of globalization is now gaining momentum throughout the world. There have been a large number of projects and papers on different values in a globalized world, with the Chinese values study being a hot topic. The Post-90s generation begins to catch attention of scholars and the public. However, the values study of this particular group in China is more of a theoretical discussion than empirical analysis. Therefore, the present study aims to empirically analyze the values of the Post-90s generation with the help of the recognized Schwartz's cross-cultural theory. Specifically, this study addresses two questions: (1) What are the value structures and priorities for contemporary Chinese young adolescents? (2)By comparing the values of the new Chinese generation with those universal values under Schwartz's individual-level values framework, is Schwartz's a priori values theory proved to be suitable for measuring the values of Chinese young adolescents? By carrying out the PVQ surveys among 211 students from 14 years old to 20 years old, the current study examined whether the value structure of Chinese young individuals was equivalent to the theorized universal model of Schwartz's. The research result showed that Schwartz's individual-level values theory was largely supported in the study. As a whole, the Post-90s generation in Shanghai valued power and tradition most but valued hedonism least. Besides, age was found to be significantly influential in values development of Shanghai adolescents. For the junior students, security was the most important value while for the senior students and university students, stimulation and self-direction meant a lot to them. The reason behind the value priorities was also investigated and discussed in the thesis.Implications of the present study for Chinese adolescent values studies are noted and directions for further research are proposed at the end of the thesis.
