Vocabulary is one of the cores of language abilities in communication. As the main means to help students learn new words and expressions, vocabulary teaching is very important.New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School requires students to master a large vocabulary and know how to use the words and expressions they have learnt. Great changes have taken place in English vocabulary teaching. The thesis based on the research conducted to investigate the current situation of vocabulary teaching in senior high schools in Xinxiang of Henan Province aims to investigate the changes about vocabulary teaching from some aspects involving the selecting of vocabulary teaching methods. Besides, the research also aims to discover whether English vocabulary teaching follows New English Curriculum Standards at present.The introduction of this thesis introduces research background, research motivation and research objectives. In the chapter of literature review, the author summarizes the related researches about English vocabulary teaching, and then gives an overview of constructivism theory that is the theoretical basis of this paper. In the chapter of research design, the author presents research questions, research methods and procedures, and data collection. In the chapter of research results and discussion, the author analyzes and discusses results of classroom observation, results of questionnaires and interviews. In the chapter of conclusion, the author points out the major findings of this research and pedagogical implications of this thesis.To investigate present situation of English vocabulary teaching, this study adopts classroom observation method, questionnaire survey method and interviewing method. The thesis aims to find the changes of vocabulary teaching, and English teachers'teaching methods and teaching concepts in the senior high school. The thesis also aims to find problems existing in vocabulary teaching and analyze the causes of the problems. Based on the analysis of the results of classroom observation, questionnaires and interviews, the author presents findings of the investigation and puts forward some suggestions for vocabulary teaching.From the research,the author finds that some teachers'teaching concepts have changed a lot after the National Standard for English Curriculum is issued. They have realized the importance and effectiveness of new teaching methods. However, the traditional teaching methods and modes are still dominant, because most of the teachers are faithful practitioners of traditional teaching methods and modes. Under the pressure of College Entrance Examination, the teachers have no enthusiasm to try new teaching methods and strategies for the limited class time. They tend to adopt traditional teaching methods. Therefore, class of vocabulary teaching is boring, and students lack interests in learning. Inefficiency of vocabulary teaching is the main problem.In order to solve the problems existing in vocabulary teaching,the author puts forward some suggestions according to the research and personal experience. The suggestions include deepening teachers'understanding of the New Curriculum Standard, using vocabulary teaching method creatively, encouraging students to read extensively, and combining class activities with living context and so on.
