Vocabulary teaching is an important part in English teaching and vocabulary is essential for learning English well. In the New Curriculum Reform, Advance with English has been officially used as the English textbook for senior schools in Hunan Province since 2007. The textbook features rich vocabularies, but the reappearance ratio of words is very low, which doesn't cohere with the English textbook by People's Education Press used in secondary school. On the other hand, compared to SEFC of 2003, the number of vocabularies in Advance with English increases greatly and the vocabulary teaching aims, teaching requirements, teaching methods and teaching strategies vary in different modules. All these mentioned above bring up a higher requirement as well as a new challenge to vocabulary teaching in senior high. Based on the investigation and research, the thesis mainly studies the current situation of vocabulary teaching in senior high schools.The thesis can be divided into three parts:First part defines the related concepts and gives literature review of research on vocabulary teaching at home and abroad. And then it offers the theoretical basis and the study meaning, purposes as well as the main contents.The second part is about the investigation on the current situation of vocabulary teaching. It discusses the results from the application of vocabulary teaching strategies, vocabulary teaching methods, the difficulties in vocabulary teaching.The third part focuses on the problems based on the investigation and gives some suggestions on vocabulary teaching.
