The study of English vocabulary has been considered as one of the basic elements of English learning.So English vocabulary teaching has become an important part for English teachers.The New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School published in 2003 put forward specific requirements of the teaching quantity,teaching methods as well as learning methods of English vocabulary teaching and learning.In the process of carrying out the New English Curriculum Standards,most experts and scholars have to face these new requirements of English vocabulary teaching.The main problems that they concern about are as follows: whether the vocabulary teaching are in accordance with the New English Curriculum Standards;whether senior English teachers have adopted some effective teaching methods and strategies;what the difficulties and requirements involve in English vocabulary teaching.The author applied Input Hypothesis in this investigation.By applying some main research methods as questionnaires,teachers' and students' interview and classroom observation,the author made a detailed investigation on the current situation of the four Senior High Schools in Huaiyang county.The research questions are as follows:(1)What are the problems existing in teacher's attitudes and recognition,time distribution and the contents of vocabulary teaching?(2)What are the main vocabulary teaching strategies used in Grade One of senior high schools?(3)What are the difficulties and requirements in English vocabulary teaching?The research found some problems about English vocabulary teaching.(1)There is commonness and individuality in teachers' cognition and attitudes and time distribution as well as the choice of teaching contents.Most teachers have a better understanding of teaching aims and tasks given by The New English Curriculum Standards.English teachers spend a large proportion of time in vocabulary teaching.It proved that they have paid much attention to the vocabulary teaching.In addition,the teachers also can grasp the vocabulary difficult and main teaching points.(2)Compared with traditional teaching,the vocabulary teaching strategies had been improved.However,the strategies are lack of innovation and even go against the English vocabulary teaching.(3)The teachers and students have the same difficulties and requirements in the teaching and learning process.This provides some effective guidance and help for future teaching.This thesis contains five chapters:Chapter One is introduction,which illustrates the research background,research objectives and research significance.Chapter Two is literature review,which explains the related concepts and theories used in the thesis and analyze different theories and ideas of vocabulary teaching both at home and abroad.Chapter Three is research design,which includes the questions of the research,the aims of the study,research methods and data collection.Chapter Four is the results and analysis of the research,which investigates and analyzes the three research questions.It also summarizes and collects the research results by applying the methods of questionnaire survey,teachers and students interview and classroom observation.In the end,the research summarizes the specific methods and steps of the real current vocabulary teaching.Chapter Five is the conclusion,which includes major findings of the investigation,implications of the study,as well as its limitations.
