Vocabulary is one of the major components of a language, and vocabulary learning is an important part of language learning system. Learning strategies are key factors that affect vocabulary learning efficiency. A lot of researches have been done on vocabulary learning strategies. However, none of them is related to the senior students in sports school. Vocabulary learning has always been the obstacle of their English learning. Study on the vocabulary learning strategies of senior students in sports school can improve the efficiency of vocabulary learning and teaching. By using questionnaire survey, interview and vocabulary test, this paper attends to explore the overall pattern of the strategies used by senior students in sports school, the differences of the strategies used by boys and girls, the differences of the strategies used by upper and lower class, and the correlation between the vocabulary learning strategies and vocabulary size.The paper consists of five chapters. Chapter I is the introduction of the background, questions and significance of the research. Chapter II is the literature review of the theoretical background of vocabulary learning strategies home and abroad. Chapter III introduces the aims, subjects, instruments and the data collecting of the research. Chapter IV discusses the results by using SPSS. Chapter V concludes some major findings: (1) Senior students in sports school use few vocabulary learning strategies. They don't know much about vocabulary learning strategies but longing for knowing more about them; (2) Girls use the strategies more frequently than boys; (3) The upper class students use the strategies more often than the lower class students; the former has a bigger internal diversity; (4) All the vocabulary learning strategies are positively correlated with the vocabulary sizes. Based on the above findings, some teaching implications are suggested at the end of the paper in hope of providing a source reference for senior English vocabulary learning and teaching in sports school.
