Textbook illustration is the second language of the text and a part of teaching material. It can be used to expand the narrative text, stimulate learning interest, and improve study efficiency, and so on. Textbook illustration is not an attachment but an important part of teaching material.However, the textbook illustration has not been developed effectively during the past 20 years. Therefore, it is a vital task for art education workers to reinforce the empirical research about the illustration function.This research discussed the two functions of the textbook illustration. On the one hand, it can promote understanding for knowledge. On the other hand, it can lead the student to experience. First, 423 primary school pupils participated this research to examine the effects of Semantic Links(SL), Position Relation(PR) and Colour Relation(CR). Second, based on related theory, the index was explored to assess the two functions, knowledge understanding and aesthetic experience. The validity of the index was also been evaluated by interviewing primary education expert of Chinese and university art expert. The results are as follows.First, there are significant effects of SL, PR and CR about the primary school Chinese textbook illustration which reflect the two functions, knowledge understanding and aesthetic experience of textbook illustration.Second, the index is credible. There are agreement between the primary education expert of Chinese and university art expert. It can be used to assess the functions-- understanding knowledge and experience aesthetic of primary school Chinese textbook illustration.
