Based on the research of the present teaching situations of eight universities in Chengdu which has established courses for orienteering ,this thesis aims to offer reference for the sustainable development of the orienteering teaching for Chengdu and even other areas. The methods adopted are literature material method, investigation, statistics law, logic analysis and so on. The conclusions drawn from the analysis of this research are as follows:One. The coverage rate of orienteering in the universities in Chengdu is low, with a few universities establishing courses for orienteering. The orienteering is slow to develop in the the universities in Chengdu and the form of it is relatively single.Two. There exits many deficiencies in the orienteering teaching in the universities in Chengdu ,such as insufficiency of course hours ,lack of teaching material construction, shortage of teaching equipment,imbalance of teaching arrangement,and backwardness of assessment methods.Three. The universities in Chengdu lack professional orienteering teachers and these teachers are relatively young, with relatively low education ,low teaching fixed number of year, low titles, limited ways to develop self professional skills and knowledge, lacked professional systematic training classes to organize the learning of orienteering. Teachers are highly supportive of establishing the orienteering courses in universities, but they are not so satisfied withe the teaching effect of orienteering. Three main factors affecting the teaching effect are the shortage of teaching equipment, the insufficiency of course hours and the inadequacy of leadership support, and other factors include inadequate funding, low enthusiasm of students and insufficient publicityFour.University students in Chengdu show great interests in orienteering, motivated by their own interests and the benefit of strengthening their body. They get information about orienteering mainly through the Internet, newspapers and books. They have increased their cognition degree of orienteering by taking the orienteering course, but their mastery of the skills and knowledge is not so ideal.The situation that students involved in orienteering in their extra-curricular time is not so optimistic and the main factors contributing to this are the shortage of teaching equipment and the lack of atmosphere of the orienteering.Five. The main factors impacting the orienteering teaching are are insufficiency of course hours, lack of teaching equipment, shortage of faculty, ill-form of text, backwardness of assessment methods,deficiency of atmosphere of orienteering and inadequacy of the leaders' attention. These factors have certain influences on the development of orienteering in the universities in Chengdu and pose some restrictions.Six.The effective way to develope orienteering is to enhance the leaders'attention, accelerate popularization, increase the course hours, promote the standardization of the teaching materials, improve the assessment methods, strengthen the training of the faculties,fortify the input of fund ,work jointly with the off-campus clubs ,and so on . Make full use of Chengdu's resources and take the path of developing the orienteering with the characteristics of Chengdu universities.
