The countries all over the world have recognized fostering students'autonomous learning ability as an important educational indicator since1990of the20th century. The theory and application study on autonomous learning have become unprecedented prosperous."To enable students to form effective learning strategies and to develop their self-regulated learning ability and team-spirit" are seen as one of the main objectives of teaching English, which is said in the English curriculum standard of the Full-time Compulsory Education" in senior high school. Because long one-sided pursuit of percentage of high school in English education in China, the cultivation of autonomous learning ability of students has been neglected, resulting in students' autonomous learning ability is poor. Therefore, developing students'autonomous learning ability is a very important task. In the teaching of English, vocabulary teaching plays an important part. This article is intended to teach students vocabulary learning strategies in vocabulary teaching to cultivate their autonomous learning ability. Cultivating their autonomous learning ability in English teaching is the final destination as well as an effective way to solve vocabulary difficulties of high school students in English teaching. The thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter I explains the importance of autonomous learning ability and current situation of vocabulary teaching and states the purpose of this thesis research. Chapter II states the theories and research of vocabulary learning strategies and autonomous learning at home and abroad. Chapter III investigates the present situation of high school students' English vocabulary learning through questionnaires. The following are the findings. The students generally think little of the importance of vocabulary learning and their initiative is not high. Whatever, the teachers spend little time on the vocabulary teaching in the classroom. They believe that there is nothing to teach in addition to vocabulary knowledge itself, such as the pronunciation of a word and its definition and they rarely deal with the vocabulary memory strategies. Some teachers even say words should have been studied and memorized by the students themselves. Students memorize the vocabulary mainly by strategies of dictionary and word list. However, the strategies used are not quite right. According to the survey, I come up with a suggestion to solve these problems, that is, teachers should cultivate and promote their autonomous learning ability in English vocabulary teaching. Autonomous learning ability is the ultimate goal of vocabulary teaching, which in turn is also a strategy to better the present situation of students' vocabulary learning. In the fourth chapter the thesis states the necessity and feasibility of developing students' autonomous learning ability in English vocabulary teaching. The next chapter describes the methods to cultivate students' autonomous learning ability and apply them in vocabulary teaching. The sixth chapter is a summary section, in my view, vocabulary teaching with the goal of cultivating autonomous learning ability is effective, is the solution to better the present situation vocabulary learning.
