For a long time, the phenomenon of valuing knowledge and neglecting affects has universally existedin China's middle school English teaching, which not only affects the quality of English teaching but alsorestrains students' emotional development. In recent years, with the development of the educationpsychology and education reform, many researchers both at home and abroad have explored and studiedthe importance of affects in foreign language learning. In the process of English teaching, more and moreattention has been paid to cultivating the students' positive affects. However, most of the studies focus onthe relation between affective factors and foreign language learning in a macroscopic view. Few of themconduct specific study on the negative affects of Grade Two students in senior high school. In addition,influenced by the long-term examination-oriented education in China, many teachers have realized thatemotional factors greatly affect students' English learning, however, they fail to pay enough attention inteaching practice. Therefore, this thesis is to analyze the negative affects of English learning of Grade Twostudents in senior high school.This thesis intends to find out the main negative affects of English learning of Grade Two students inXinxiang No.2Senior High School and the reasons for these negative affects and then propose somefeasible strategies for overcoming negative affects and developing positive ones in order to improve thequality of the English teaching in senor high school and the students' learning efficiency. The thesis startsby reviewing the previous researches on this subject, and the research is conducted on the basis of thefollowing theories: Krashen's Theory of Affective Filter Hypothesis, Jane Arnold's Second LanguageAcquisition Theory and Constructivism. The subjects are249Grade Two students from Xinxiang No.2Senior High School, the research questions are:(1) what are the main negative affects that affect theEnglish learning of Grade Two students in Xinxiang No.2Senior High School?(2) What are the causes ofthe negative affects? The research instruments are questionnaire, observation and interview.First, through percentage statistics the author finds out four major negative affects of students' Englishlearning. Then the author finds out the reasons for these negative affects by interviewing the students andteachers separately. Finally, in order to overcome negative affects and cultivate positive ones, the author puts forward some countermeasures:(1) Teachers should lower the students' learning anxiety, enhance theirself-confidence, stimulate their learning motivation, cultivate their interest, create harmonious relationshipand promote the affective communications between teachers and students.(2) Parents should participate incultivating the students' positive affects actively.(3) Students should make their efforts to overcome theirnegative affects and develop their positive ones actively and positively together with their parents andteachers.
