Since tourism plays an important role in the Western Development, it is of great significance to carry out the study on optimizing the patterns of tourism development in ethnic regions in West China, which will have great influences on optimizing the allocation of tourism resources and promoting the tourism in those areas. By using socio-economic surveys, statistical analysis, spatial analysis and other methods and with the help of theories like economics, tourism, geography, location theory and distribution of industry, this paper assesses the potential of tourism development in West China, analyzes its present conditions as well as its spatial distribution. Based on these analyses, this paper does some researches and gives a plan on the functions of different areas in West china, key construction areas and key tourist routes and proposes some feasible measures.This paper falls into seven parts.Part one, Introduction. This part gives a clear explanation of the background of the study, its significance, technical routes and methods adopted. Since ethnic regions in West China abounds with vast land, many ethnic minorities and rich tourism resources, studies on the patterns of tourism development in ethnic regions in West China are conducive to optimizing the patterns of tourism development, speeding up the tourism in this area, promoting national unity and building a harmonious society. Part two, a literature review. By sorting out and analyzing the documents both at home and abroad, this part concludes that documents related to optimizing patterns of tourism development in ethnic regions in West China are scanty. Secondhand materials are mainly concerned with researches on tourism development, its spatial structures, and spatial structure of tourism systems.Part three, assessment of development of tourism resources in ethnic regions in West China. By using SWOT, this part assesses the possibilities of the development of tourism resources in ethnic regions in West China. Tourism development in ethnic regions in West China has many advantages such as: its wide variety, its primitiveness and uniqueness, and its ethnic features. Despite the great potential of the tourism in ethnic regions in West China, however, due to its unfavorable locations and its backward infrastructures as well as its plain images, tourism in ethnic regions in West China is faced with threats like natural erosion, human damages and deterioration of cultural environments.Part four, the present conditions of the development of tourism resources in ethnic regions in West China. It assesses the development patterns objectively through a comparison between development patterns in the scenic sites and outside the sites from those aspects such as scenic sites, travel agencies, revenues, and hotels. From the absolute numbers or the relative amounts, ethnic regions in West China boasts rich tourism resources. However, its rich tourism resources are out of proportion with its size and the population it holds because of its low level of development. In the first ten years of the 21st century, the tourists received in ethnic regions in West China witnessed a rapid increase. Nevertheless, its development is not so fast as that in East China. Even in its own area, tourism development differs considerably from one site to another. At present, Southwest China enjoys the predominance of the overall tourism in ethnic regions in West China, but it faces many challenges especially when the development patterns are undergoing drastic changes.Part five, analyses of optimizing the patterns of tourism development in ethnic minority areas of West China. In general, tourism resources in ethnic regions in West China are centered in some certain areas, which differ greatly among provinces. Overall, the distribution enjoys a Y feature, namely along the railways and around the capitals of different provinces or autonomous regions. The scenic areas in ethnic regions in West China can be classified into five kinds: scenic sites of ethnic features and magnificent landscapes in Yunnan and Guizhou; scenic sites of ethnic features and marvelous valleys in Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality; wilderness areas along the Silk Road in Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia; grasslands in Xinjiang and Inter Mongolia; primitive areas of religious features in Qinghai and Tibet. Besides, this part does researches on the key areas and put forward that 25 sites for group view are expected to construct, and designs the key routes according to these analyses. Part six, feasible measures to optimizing the patterns of tourism development in ethnic regions in ethnic regions in West China. Based on the analyses, this part proposes some feasible measures on these aspects such as the tourism resources in ethnic regions in West China should develop in accordance with the local conditions, deep cooperation is about to build between different scenic sites, brilliant images are needed to promote, different sites should have a clear division of labor, traffic conditions are needed to improve.Part seven, conclusion. This part concludes the main analyses and researches in this paper, and discusses its inadequacy and points out the direction for further research.
