After the Cold War, the world has been transferred from polarization to multipolarization. The globalization has been enhanced by leaps and bounds, and the relationships of the uperpowers have been dramatically structured, especially the relationships in Asia which have experienced slight yet comparatively stable changes. Furthermore, the structural changes of China and Japan are the most obvious one in this area. Japan and China has made the debut as two superpowers in East Asia. The regionalism emerged after the Cold War. ASEAN Integration is stregthened, and in the meantime integration of East Asia draws great attention from all over the world. However, with regard to the dominant position, Japan, China and other South-east countries come to strive for the diminating power of the region. In particular, the competition between China and Japan for the dominancy becomes increasingly ferocious. The competition is specifically apparent in the Mekong River area. In addition, five countries in Southeast Asia have put forward the strategy of the balance of power between China and Japan, which worsens the present relationship between China and Japan. This paper is aimed at analyzing the competition between China and Japan in the Mekong River area based on the description of the the present cooperation. It has been pointed out that the increasingly fierce competition in this area has a negative influence on China, Japan, and other countries in this region. Through analysis, we can see that these two countries will result in common interests on condition that they cooperate with each other. After analyzing the feasibility of the two countries cooperating in this area, approaches and modes of cooperation have been proposed in this paper. The approach to cooperation will be that the authorities of China and Japan are supposed to establish a reliable relationship and to put forward the proper policy to enhance the mutual development, which should be market-oriented and the enterprises and elites should actively participate in. And at last the governments and enterprises of the two countries seek the internal cooperation. The cooperation mode will be "6+1 "mode. Via this mode, the cooperation between the Mekong River area and Japan will be patterned and specialized, which better contributes to the future development. The aim of this paper is to seek proper approaches and modes for the development in the Mekong River area and to make a modest contribution to the study of this area.
