Competency research began in the early 1970's in America. Competency refers to the personal and potential characteristics related to the effective or excellent performance, the concept of competency can clearly make a distinction between those with outstanding performance and ones with general performance in organization.As the competition in China's property insurance industry is getting more and more intense, a large number of middle-level managers who are able to meet the requirements for property insurance industry are in urgent need. As the backbone of enterprises, middle-level managers paly a crucial role in creating company's profits and development so that the middle-level managers'competency level will directly influence the operation and development of enterprises. In this circumstance, every property insurance company has attached great importance to the criteria we should use to select, appoint and train these people.This research choose middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry as the tragets, employs questionnaire method to explore the job competency of middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry empirically. The paper combine the theory with practice and explore the competency that middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry who want to acquire excellent performance, then it establishes the competency model of middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry and study the relationship between demography variables and the competency performance of middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry.The paper is mainly through literture search and analysis,behavior events interview (BEI) and other ways to collect the item of questionnaire, and compiles an initial questionnaire. Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis the pretest of the questionnaire and results, and further amendments to the questionnaire, we compile a formal investigate questionnaire. During the study process, we investigate more than 200 middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry, then test the reliability and credibility of the resrarch results of a cromprehensive test through statistical analysis.The research indicates that the competency model of middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry consists of 5 factors:managerial skills,team relationship & leadership,execution ability & controllability,personal characteristics,client consciousness & risk consciousness. Through analying demography variables (gender,age,education,the years of present position,position nature,organization level,the size of company and the region of company), we find that the middle-level managers in Jiangsu Province property insurance industry who less than 30 years old pay more attention to " managerial skills","team relationship & leadership","execution ability & controllability","personal characteristics","client consciousness & risk consciousness"; the shorter a person engage in the present position, the more attention paid to "managerial skills" and "team relationship & leadership"The conclusions of the research are conductive to provide empirical evidences to the middle-level managers in property insurance industry including selection,training and development,compensation management,performance appraisal and aslo provide suggestions to career planning of middle-level managers in property insurance industry.
