Study On Operating Efficiency In The Star Hotel Industry

The hotel industry as one of the three pillar industries of tourism, its operating efficiency being good or not, is the concern of every enterprise managers; how to assess the operational efficiency is one of the important areas of tourist hotel enterprise management. At present, the study about operating efficiency of the hotel in domestic and international, usually compares common financial index of the business; but the analysis on the hotel's operational efficiency, such as technical efficiency, management efficiency and allocative efficiency, which is systematical and comprehensive, was weak.Efficiency evaluation is an essential component of the enterprise management control. Evaluation of operational efficiency is not only the basis for enterprises to develop business strategies, but also improve the basis for enterprises to improve. Therefore, the assessment of operational efficiency of enterprises was an important and wide range of topics. Over the years, many managers, economists and other scholars have tried on the hotel industry's operating efficiency analysis. Based on the star hotel of Wuhu City, selecting the historical data from Statistical Yearbook on Wuhu City from 2005 to 2009, the paper applied data envelopment analysis to research, which on the one hand helped enrich and strengthen data envelopment analysis in the application field of tourism, and strengthen integration and efforts related to interdisciplinary research, on the other hand helped to promote the rational planning and sustainable development of the hotel industry of Wuhu City,Based on the quantitative analysis, the paper analysed the operating efficiency status on the star hotels of Wuhu City and its counties; and based on the perspective of government and enterprise managers, suggested Policy recommendations to improve the efficiency of hotel operations from the macro level and micro level. Paper's structure was divided into five chapters: In Chapter 1, General Introduction, this chapter firstly discussed the background and significance of the operating efficiency of the hotel industry, comb and Comment the theory of DEA and hotel efficiency in the application of the tourism studies. On this basis, proposed the framework and methodology of this study.The second chapter was part of the basic theory and model constructing, explained the concept of efficiency, the efficiency of hotel, hotel operating efficiency and the DEA efficiency theory, established the theoretical foundation of operating efficiency of the hotel. Based on the principle of DEA theory and analysis methods, combined with operating characteristics of the hotel industry, proposed the micro and macro indexes of hotel industry efficiency evaluation and explained the relevant evaluation indexes. On this basis, builded a evaluation model for operating efficiency of hotel industry. In Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, the Case Study, under the data of the star hotels operation in Wuhu city from 2005 to 2009, the author firstly analyzed the status of the hotel industry of Wuhu City. Secondly, used DEA model; analyzed quantitatively the operational efficiencies of the star hotels in Wuhu City, conducted a systematic analysis from the angle of different geographic locations, different stars, different ownership and different years, summed up to obtain the Features of operating efficiency of Wuhu City Star Hotels; analyzed the influential factors of the operating efficiency star hotels in Wuhu City, from the micro and macro view. Finally, from the micro and macro perspective, the measures were proposed to improve the efficiency of hotel operation.In Chapter 5, the conclusion part, the author summarized and explored the main achievements of the thesis as well as work to be done in further. Efficiency is one of the important research topics from management and economics. Enhancing the research of the operational efficiency of the hotel has the important practical significance for promoting efficiency of the hotel management. This thesis reviewed the concept of efficiency and the concept of the hotel efficiency, proposed the concept of the hotel operational efficiency, improved the knowledge of hotel efficiency and enriched the contents of the hotel efficiency studying.2,Constructed evaluate model of hotel industry operating efficiency. Based on the review and synthesis of DEA literature, this thesis constructed measure indexes of hotel industry operating efficiency, So that the study of the hotel efficiency is more standardized.
