Generally, a shearer project will request huge commitment in time, investment, coordination and management. The returns are subject to market changes and many uncertainties. For H Company, a newly-founded shearer manufacturer engaged in the development of shearer products and the solutions to process improvements, its projects are crucial to the success of products and the growth of the company. This paper thus will discuss in depth the planning and implementation of a thin seam shearer project and the findings of the research.The planning of a project development is also a process to explicit the range, goals and strategies, making practical decisions on how to initiate, implement and terminate the project in order to formulate a roadmap for the project, for which the project manager need to be sufficiently informed to know exactly how to organize the whole project: the steps to take, the time to start, the resources and the people to engage in, and the deadline and the standards to meet. Again, this paper will make a systematic analysis of the methodology for the design and control of the project process.My research on thin seam shearer projects lead to the findings that imperfect planning and loose control often result in poor preparation, hasty conclusions and applications, and unfulfilled goals.To find satisfactory solutions to the problems, I have conducted intensive studies on the factors in the company's management affecting product development, i.e., the challenges confronted by project managers in conducting shearer product development. Based on my own experience and the managers'of product development home and abroad, I have come up with two proposals concerned with shearer project management: to take enforced measures in management and to conduct strict control throughout the whole process, analyzing the risks and working out countermeasures.This paper will, drawing from the practices of thin seam shearer projects, make case studies on project design, risk analysis and exploration for countermeasures. Inspired by the latest research findings home and abroad in the industry, this paper will be devoted to thorough thinking in the implementation and management of this project with consideration into its particularities, and proposals will be made regarding shearer project planning and risk control and countermeasures. I believe that comprehensive planning for the project is of crucial significance. The planning need to be well corresponded with the designed project process, defining the range, goals, procedures, specific activities, duration of activities, resource distribution, cost assessment and risk control. It should be a scientific planning package involving preparatory formalities, roadmap, resource management, and cost and risk control, all well conducted and monitored to ensure the final success of the project.
