Study On The Present Situation And Development Strategy Of Agricultural Products Processing Industy In Wenzhou

The supply of agricultural products has been falling short of the demand for a long time in Wenzhou. In recent ten years, the supply-demand relationship basically reached a balance with some agricultural products being oversupplied. The increase in the total supply of agricultural products urges an expedited development of the agricultural products processing, which may benefit the resolving of various conflictions occurred in this new development stage of agriculture in Wenzhou. By making use of literature review and interviews, this study first summarizes the state of the art and characteristics of the agriculture production and agricultural products processing industry in Wenzhou. Problems in the agricultural products processing industry in Wenzhou are then examined in detail. Finally, strategies for expediting the development of agricultural products processing industry are proposed. The following findings are drawn in this study:1. The output value of agriculture in Wenzhou increases as a whole over the past ten years (2000～2010). Among the various agricultural industries, crop farming and fishery are two dominant industries. Rapid development is seen in the vegetable sector. The tea output also grows quickly which makes Wenzhou feature the unique early spring tea in Zhejiang Province. Pork is the main development direction in animal husbandry, while saltwater fishing is the main completive industry in fishery.2. A rudimentary agricultural products processing system has been developed so far. Wenzhou has obvious advantages in its geographical position and resources. The agricultural products processing industry in Wenzhou shows outstanding features and leading industries. The scale of the agricultural products processing enterprises expand continuously, and the role of agriculture market leader is further enhanced. The tea processing is a newly emerged area of growth, while aquatic product processing remains the conventional leading industry in the agricultural products processing industry in Wenzhou.3. Problems restricting the development of agricultural products processing industry in Wenzhou are examined in detail. Specifically, the problems include the constraints posed by the management system, the insufficient enhancing capability of agricultural products processing industry chain, the severe safety issues of agricultural products, lack of standard of agricultural products and their inspection and supervision system, undesirable development environment, short of specialized technicians in agricultural products processing, and low technical level of agricultural products processing.4. The development strategies of the agricultural products processing industry in Wenzhou are proposed. Advantages in ocean and mountain forest resources should be fully explored. Information management system based on the supply chain should be established. Quality assurance system should been formulated. Development environment should be improved. Macro-control should be enhanced. The enhancement of the competitive capability is the core, institutional renovation the means, processing park the media, and fostering of market leader the key to the development. Strategy of famous brand should be implemented and industry chain should be enhanced.
