The《Athens Charter》states:"Inhabiting is the most important activity in City." The environmental quality of residential land directly effects the sustainable development of city. Therefore, location choice of residential land has always been the classic issue which economist geographer,city planner,archaeologist and sociologist are interested in. Based on the definition of residential land character as well as the evaluation of land suitability, this paper constructs an ecology-economical analysis framework of residential land suitability according to the theory of sustainable development, location theory and ecology. Following the guidance of this framework, we design an evaluation system of land use, qualify the ecological factors, and integrate them into the ecological framework. Take Nanjing City for example, having generated a land use surface with 1km×1km cell size, we use GIS spatial data analysis tool and network analysis method to evaluate the residential land suitability, which will provide a scientific basis for the location choice of residential land use for Nanjing suburb area. This paper is divided into four parts:The first portion based on the analysis current process of Chinese cities, the urban disorder expansion, ecological land plummeted, spatial layout disorder and other cities environmental problem, proposed present research contents and objectives;The second section reviews the relevant theory. Comparison of domestic and foreign scholars on the living environment and livable city study, analyzed the factors affecting the layout of residential land and suitability assessment;The third part analysis the theoretical foundation of suitability evaluation,use sustainable development theory as a guide, relying on location theory of rigorous economic logic framework, drawing ecological theory, put the ecological factors which affects the choice of living space into the location of on the cost-benefit analysis, forming based on the ecological-economic analysis framework, building urban residential land suitability assessment index system, based on the study of the quantitative indicators and integrated approach proposed the evaluation method in this study;The fourth part use five suburbs of Nanjing as example, select the characterization of residential land development costs and benefits of both indicators, building evaluation model. Using GIS Spatial analysis and network analysis method, first evaluate of each single factor, according to Delphi method to determine the elements of each single weight, then integrate evaluation of costs and benefits of residential land development, using the final classification matrix compare, and determine the appropriate layout of living space.
