Study On Bian Que Belief

When it comes to Bian Que, people not only take an interest in his excellent medical skills, but also argue the multiple doubts about himself. As the researchers explore Bian Que's name, native place, medical practice stories, works, even the authenticity of his tomb with static historical investigation method, among the people, wherever Bian Que took his medical practice and the surrounding regions, his story became the legend and be widely circulated, he was canonized as the Lord, people built tomb, molded statue, built temples and ancestral halls, burned incense and worshiped him. Bian Que was highly praised as a God and became the object of belief. Mr. Wu Bingan once said:"Bian Que became a god-man from a highly-skilled doctor by what he had done and be worshiped devoutly." By what way Bian Que became the God of medical from a great doctor? During our research process, Shentou Village of Neiqiu County in Hebei Province where the legends about Bian Qu is relatively concentrated and the belief relics is preserved relatively complete entered to our view and served as a model for our study.From an angle of folk belief, taking Bian Que belief in Shentou Village of Neiqiu County in Hebei Province as an example, combining other literatures and legend materials where Bian Que relics can be found, applying the correlation theory of folklore in folk literature and method for symbolic analysis in folklore studies, this paper tries to explore the process, cultural connotation, characteristics of Bian Que belief forming, as well as its developing trend at the current stage, and aims to offer a new view for study on Bian Que, and be served as an indirect analysis on doubts existed in study on Bian Que.This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is introduction including literature review and writing space. Bian Que Belief is introduced from kinds of mythologies of Bian Que by legend. Motives, methods and significance of the paper are also explained.The second chapter discusses from highly-skilled doctor to god of medicine, and the origin and development and ups and downs of the historical context of Bian Que's belief as well as its subject—believers'role in this belief. It talks about the issue that who believes and how to believe.The third chapter discusses the symbolic meaning and cultural connotation of different folklore symbols in Bian Que Belief system. By analyzing the interrelationship of physical symbols, legend symbols and synthetically dynamic symbols in Bian Que's belief, the symbolic meaning and cultural connotation implied in different belief symbols by interaction are revealed. It answers the question of why they believe.The fourth chapter is the conclusion. It summarizes characteristics of Bian Que Belief, analyzes its trends at the present stage, and illustrates its social meaning. It also proposes a superficial view of correctly handling and excavating folk belief resources.
