As a key agricultural area in Beijing, Shunyi has been developed into one of the typical forage industry areas. Since 2000, Beijing forage industry has been developed based on planting structure adjustment by the government. Since then, the Shunyi forage industry was developed rapidly, by 2003, the forage planting area had been increased into about 11,800 hactre, distributed in two forage industrial zone from east to west, including Dasungezhuang,Zhangzhen and Mulin in the east, and Gaoliying, Zhaojiaying, Niushan and Mapo in the west. Diversified forage mainly include three types: 1) forage for high nutrient, such as alfalfa with high protein; 2) forage for ruminant livestock, such as maize, triticale, ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and Wancao no 2 (Sorghum bicolorxSorghum. sudanense (F1).Lcv).; 3) forage for agroecological function such as the February orchids (Orychophragmus uiolaceus), the clover, and the green manure for soil erosion control and soil fertility increasing. The total is more than 40 varieties. But in 2004, forage industry faced many challenges. The industrial scale started shrinking year by year. By 2010, it went down to 5000 hactre. Production machinery was forced to idle or converted to another use and the company operations was difficult due to lack of forage source.For this study, we analysed current situation of the forage industrial development, main problems it faced and relevant solutions in Shunyi District. Total 19 typical communities and more 1000 farmers were involved in this study, Based on on-farm surveies, statistical data and site experiments, we have completed statistical and SWOT analysis on the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of Shunyi forage industry, and proposed some suggestions. The study showed main limitations to forage industry developing included 1) lack of techniques for adopting to arid climate; 2) processing technology limit the value adding of forage products; 3) forage became mildewed during rainy season, and the quantity and quality were reduced; 4) the high protential was not fully explored; 5) lack of relevant research. Based on deep analysis, we proposed some suggestions includingl) scaling up the forage planting to mainstream the forage industry; 2) encouraging the enterprise to play the leading role, and incease the techonoly investment to develop more diversified products for meeting the market demand; 3) strengthening the research transfer and application, encouraging more advanced techniques applied into forage industry; 4) promoting more supporting policies developed. However, there are many challenges, especially including the source and the climate. This study will provide good guidline for making feasible strategy promoting Shunyi forage industry.
