Different regions have formed various and colorful marriage customs, these customs have unique local characteristics. This article uses the methods of field survey, the union of documents materials and comparative study, and chose the research area in Jinan, the essay describes and analyses the inheritance sand transitions of city marriage customs after the establishment of New China. By studying the author draws conclusions as follows:" the marriage bases on love", which gets rid of feudalistic superstition and reflects the human society from backwards to advancement, from unenlightened to civilization. "survival fittest", of the marriage customs mean that the marriage customs which adapted to the development of society were preserved, and vice versa, that is these marriage customs which were not accepted by the society were eliminated. The marriage customs discard the dross and select the essence during the development, for example: nowadays the standard of choose spouse prefers the inherence, as moral quality, capability and so on; the age of getting marriage is older; the sphere of getting marriage is wider, the wedding car also changed; some old customs came back during wedding ritual; the quality and quantity of wedding banquets get improved, etc. All this reflects the progress of society, the development of economy, pay more attention in education, the advancement of technology and the improvement of people's living standard. Putting marriage in a legal system displays the progress is human civilization, the publishing and implement of《Marriage Law》protects women's rights, and advocate free courtship, form a new custom of founding new style family, all of these are the reflection of entering a legal society. Divorce on agreement is a progress of the era, it also proves that people's attitudes have changed about divorce which from clashing on divorce to understanding and tolerant. Although this phenomenon has influenced China thousands of years. After reform and opening up, our government puts the family planning as a basic national policy, and advocates late marriage, childbearing, fewer and eugenics, one couple only can give birth to one child. It is better for the improvement of national economy and people's living standard. The family structure develops from extended family to nuclear family, and return to extended family gradually, it also contains "humble abode family", "the boomerang kids", the appearing of these new phenomenon is an inevitable product of the social development. It also brings many problems that need to be considered.
