Bohai Regional Economic Development And Internal Disparity Analysis

Great economic achievements have been made since the reform and opening began from 1978 in China, while extraordinary regional economic disparity in her economic development still remains a prominent issue. Bohai Rim region is one of the three major economic circles in China, which plays an extremely important role in national economic development. However, great development gaps inside region, lack of inter-regional division of labor and industry structure issues--all these problems also exist in Bohai Rim region, hampering the stable and rapid development of regional economy. Generally speaking, the Bohai Rim regional economic development situation is not satisfactory. The development pace is relatively slower in comparison with other domestic economic circles. Now is the time that China launches her twelfth Five-year Plan, so it is crucial to find ways to improve the circumstances here quickly.Hence, this article will choose Bohai region as the study object, evaluate the status of its development and analyze the causes of intra-regional differences. Firstly it will compare the three major economic circles overall and find the position of Bohai Rim region in national economic development, showing the slow-growing fact of Bohai Rim region with data. After that it will build a multi-index evaluation system to assess cities in Bohai Rim region using factor analysis in order to understand the status of the development of the Bohai Rim region, which will give an empirical basis of excessive regional differences. Then it will describe and summarize the trend of regional differences in past decades by using statistics and indicators measuring variation. Also from the industrial and spatial perspectives, the article will decompose the Gini coefficient and Theil index, studying the inherent differences in these aspects in order to identify the causes: The tertiary industry needs to be upgraded; the distribution in the primary industry has been improved, gradually narrowing the gap between urban and rural areas; between-city and between-provincial disparities are getting larger, etc. Such detailed conclusions will be drawn from the article. Finally, based on these conclusions while considering the conditions in Bohai Rim region, the article will set forth related suggestions supported by sufficient data and proper theories.
