The application of ERP has been hot for several decades. People now can face ERP system rationally. If we review the process of ERP application in China, we can get three stages together: (1) launch stage which lasted for almost the whole 1980's. But due to a lot of restriction, the result is not satisfied. (2) Development stage which lasted from 1990 to 1996. During this period, we made a great progress in application especially for MRPII. (3) Mature stage which indicates the current time. In this stage, application of ERP has moved to fields other than manufacturing industry and the management base of company is becoming better and better. The whole society has witness the result resulted from ERP application.With the development of ERP application, a lot of method lies are introduced to ERP implementation which actually is the extension of project management. So the target of this article is to study the risk management in ERP project management.Logically the article can be divided into two parts- introduction of theory regarding to risk management and real case study. At the beginning, we start with a summary of ERP application in China and draw a conclusion of necessity of ERP. The article also gives some introduction about the definition of risk, risk control in ERP project and common risk of ERP implementation. Through the introduction of risk management theory, the author wants to impress the reader with overview of Risk management an control in real projects.The second part is case discussions, which gives the reader a true case for understanding the risk management in ERP projects. First come the introduction of background of this case– the ERP application in shanghai Carrier Transicold Co., Ltd and the main risk factors in this project. Then based on the risk analysis, the whole risk management procedure is divided into 2 parts, e.g. risk management preparation and risk management handling. Risk management preparation is a guideline for the risk management handling which includes the principle and base for the management activities. Risk handling has 4 steps: establishing a special team for risk management, identifying potential risk factors, assessing project risk and make a plan for it, monitoring and managing risk. In each step, detailed example, statistics tools and graphics are used to make it easy for understanding.Although there are a lot of articles regarding to ERP project risk management, few focuses on a real case study. Hope this article is useful to the enterprise.
