| The family Hesperiidae, commonly known as "skippers" includesaround4000species, of which Hesperiinae is the largest subfamily.Baorini is the tribe of subfamily Hesperiinae, which was first establishedby Doherty as Baorinae at1886with the type genus Baoris Moore,1881.The taxonomic history began with its description by Linnaeus (1764) ofthe first taxon, Papilio niso (now Gegenes niso). Up to now12generaand97species have been known all over the world,7genera and42species known in China, and14of them endemic to Chinese fauna. However, taxonomic study on the tribe Baorini in China are onlysome sporadic studies but without systematic researches. Most of theknown species were reported or recorded by foreign scholars and typespecimens were also deposited overseas. So there are great difficultiesfor us to study Baorini of Chinese fauna.China has diversity geographical environment and bestrides boththe Palaearctic and the Oriental Regions, and is the largest countrybestride two zoogeographical regions. The Baorini resources are veryabundant, in order to clarify these Hesperiid resources in China, theauthor selected that as the topic of his MS thesis. The study was basedon the consulting all related literatures and examining some typespecimens, and careful examinations of more than600specimenscollected from Beijing, shanxi, shanghai, zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi,Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan,Xizang, Shaanxi and Taiwan. The conclusions of my study are summedas below:1. This thesis was the first systematic study on the Tribe Baorini fromChina.2. The systematic account recorded8genera and43species ofBaorini in China, of which,1new genus and species, and1new species were diagnosed as new to science,1new Chinese recorded and6new synonyms were reported.3. All species were described in detail, with the citation, collectingdata, and distribution information of each taxon.96colour photos foradults,40illustrations for male genitalia and27for female genitalia wereprovided.4. The key to the genera of Baorini of world was presented (exceptthe genera Brusa and Zenonia in the Palaeotropical region), and thekey to Chinese species of most genus was provided.5. A List of the Tribe Baorini Doherty,1886of the world was given.New genus and species found in this work: Tsukiyamaia gen. nov.,Tsukiyamaia macromaculata sp. nov.; New species: Polytremis jigongisp. nov.; Species new to Chinese fauna: Caltoris aurociliata (Elwes&Edwards); New synonyms: Pelopidas grisemarginata Yuan, Zhang&Yuan syn. nov.(=Pelopidas mathias oberthueri, Evans), Baoris discretafelicia Evans syn. nov.(=Polytremis discreta discreta Elwes&Edwards)),Polytremis pellucida inexpecta Tsukiyama, Chiba&Fujioka syn. nov.(=Polytremis pellucida quanta Evans), Polytremis zina taiwanaMurayama syn. nov.(=Polytremis zina zina (Evans), Baoris longistigmataHuang syn. nov.(=Baoris farri (Moore)), Baoris carina Evans syn. nov.(=Caltoris cahira austeni (Moore)). |
