Municipal solid waste (MSW) generation increased year by year, which hasbecomed a bottleneck for the development of China cities. Particularly emission ofpollutants generated by the waste incineration has caused the public’s attention inrecent years. According to projections, the solid waste generation will reach4900t/din Qingdao downtown during the12th Five-Year Plan. Qingdao MSW system hasnow included asanitary landfill, incineration and composting technologies. But inorder to minimize the environmental impact, the study of the optimization of thedifferent disposal methods is needed. It has identified six waste disposal programs considering the classification or not、the change of incineration scale and other factors badsed on the amount of wasteproduced、the composition of the time and space analysis in Qingdao. Then thepotential environmental impact value of six kinds municipal waste treatment methodsfor different environment impact types and total potential environmental impact werecalculated by using the Life-Cycle Assessment(LCA) and selecting global warming, acidification, eutrophication, photochemical synthesis of ozone and ecologicaltoxicity and their characteristic-based factors. The results show that:(1)With the scale of the incineration increased, the global warming, acidification, eutrophication and photochemical synthesis of ozone are decreasing, but ecologicaltoxicity increases firstly, then decreases. And the total environmental impact isdecreasing.(2) Compared with landfill-based program, waste classification will reduce the lifecycle environmental impact. But with the scale of burning increased, mixed wastecollection and processing method impact less than separate collection and processingmethod in environment.(3) The evaluation showed that currently the optimal solution of MSW in Qingdaois mixed collection, mixed transport,4500t/d to waste incinerator plant burning,300t/d to compost and400t/d to landfill, whose potential of the full LCA environmental impact is the lowest.
