Water expandable polystyrene (WEPS) is a kind of environment-friendlymaterial prepared without organic foaming agent (VOC). To be more specific,water was used as foaming agent instead of organic foaming agent (VOC).This project was supported by Chinese petroleum technology innovation fund,this article aims at develop some new WEPS products. The main job is asfollowing:(1) A kind of water expandable polystyrene (WEPS) prepared byintroducing starch into polystyrene as carrier of water.(2) Two new kinds of water expandable polystyrene (WEPS) wereprepared via reverse emulsion polymerization of acrylic acid&sodium acrylateor acrylamide in styrene. (3) A new kind of water expandable polystyrene was prepared by in stiupolymerization with absorbent sodium polyacrylate microspheres.The results of this study are as follows:①Water was successfullyintroduced into polystyrene by three meathods,the water amount increasedwith the increasing of carrier loadings;②The polymerization would beunstable when carrier was added excessively. The dispersion of water wouldbe bad. The appropriate adding quantity in different system were: starch5-6wt%,acrylic acid3wt%, acrylamide5wt%, sodium polyacrylatemicrospheres0.3wt%;③The foaming effect would be best when wateramount was5-6wt%;④The foaming effect would be best when the time offoaming progress in oil bath is20s.
