Poly(n-butyl acrylate) was synthesized by emulsion polymerization using Diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide-Ferrous sulfate redox system as initiator. The effect of monomer feeding time, reaction temperature, and concentration of emulsifier and initiator on the polymerization rate, particle size were studied. It was found that, the particle size reduced from73nm to65nm, when the monomer feeding time extended to3h with the fixed polymerization conditions. The rate of reaction increased with the concentration of emulsifier and initiator, but obscure influence on the particle size. Particle size reduced from95nm to65nm when the reaction temperature changed from20℃to70℃. The activation energy is29.80kJ/mol.Emulsion copolymers based on glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and butyl acrylate (BA) were prepared with Diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide-ferrous sulfate redox system as initiator at30℃. Gel content of the prepared copolymers was studied. The concentrations of chain transfer agent (TDDM) and GMA, different feeding time and coagulate methods were used in an attempt to exercise control the amount of gel polymer.Using the ethanol as coagulates, there was no gel fraction in the system, and then the fraction of gel increased from0to75%during the ratio of aluminium chloride is30%. It was found that no gel observed during the GMA concentration from0to0.1%. The gel fraction achieved to86.95%suddenly when GMA concentration was0.3%with the aluminium chloride, but different from using the ethanol. Gel content increased with the GMA concentration and decreased with TDDM concentration. The gel content decreased seriously from approximately80%to0when the TDDM concentration from0.05%to0.1%. No matter how longer the feeding time, the gel decreased in the system of hunger condition. So by simultaneously manipulating both variables it was possible to modify the gel content of polymer.
